Approximately 500 cultural and artistic events take place in Zagreb annually, which makes it a live stage that nurtures and promotes cultural and artistic activities, and invests financial and organisational efforts to become a European city of culture. A large number of visitors and tourists that enjoy modern, as well as traditional, cultural creations are attracted by events such as the World Theatre Festival, Animafest - world festival of animated film, the Dance Week Festival, the Night of Museums, the Zagreb Music Biennale, the International Puppet Theatre Festival, the International Folklore Festival, Platforma HR, the Perforations Festival, the European Short Story Festival, the New Circus Festival, Zagreb Dox, the World Literature Festival, the Zagreb Film Festival, the Human Rights Film Festival, the Subversive Festival, the Festival of Tolerance, the IN Music Festival and the Queer Zagreb.
In addition to theatres, museums, concert halls and other institutions, cultural events take place in the streets of Zagreb, its courtyards - the architectonic pearls of the City, squares, palaces, churches and numerous other open spaces, which makes the culture available to an even larger number of citizens and visitors. Undisputed symbols of the City are the cultural and historical entities such as the Upper Town and Kaptol area with its palaces and churches that mirror the 900-year-old history of the City. Among these are also numerous individual cultural objects and institutions such as the Croatian National Theatre, the Art Pavilion, the Museum of Arts and Crafts, the Mimara Museum, the Mirogoj City Cemetery, the Palace of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the Zagreb Stock Exchange building and the Croatian State Archives, but also the contemporary architectonic creations such as the National and University Library, the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Academy of Music.

The Zagreb Advent/Christmas, Cest is the Best, the Dance Evenings on Zrinjevac, the Summer on Stross, the Zagreb Courtyards and the Little Market are just some of the events that have transformed the capital into an attractive tourist destination.
